According to Beating AI News, OpenAI's upcoming Astra uses a recurrent depth inference architecture, also known as a looped transformer. While a regular Transformer generates a token by traversing a fixed number of network layers, Astra allows the same information to repeatedly pass through the same set of layers, performing multiple rounds of computation before outputting the result.

ByteDance publicly explored this approach last year. Ouro, released by the Seed team, is a type of Looped Language Model that also uses a set of Transformer layers running in a loop, putting more computation into the model. The model doesn't need to constantly generate longer thought chains, which also increases the computational load for inference. Smaller models can therefore use more computation to achieve performance close to that of larger models.

This architecture also introduces a security issue. Some inference occurs in an internally hidden state, where humans cannot see the complete textual record, making it more difficult to check for violations through thought chains. OpenAI therefore limited Astra's use of recurrent depth, allowing it to retain readable thought chains, and is preparing to add additional CoT monitoring.
